What to expect

What the first session actually looks like

No mystery, no ambush. Here's the shape of it before you ever book.

You won't re-fight your worst fightTara lets you name the problems. She won't let session one become a place you dive into them — that's what leaves couples feeling worse than when they arrived.
You'll map the whole relationshipA timeline of your time together — the good years as well as the hard ones. In therapy it's called a positive asset search. In plain terms: finding what's still there.
You'll leave with something to doTwo exercises to take home, built to rebuild friendship and closeness — and to help you practise actually listening to each other again.
Does this sound like you?

You don't need a dramatic story to need help.

You've drifted apart, and you couldn't point to the day it started
You talk about the kids and the schedule, and not much else
You've built a good life — the careers, the house — and you're lonely inside it
You solve hard problems all day, but this is the one that won't budge
You've been thinking about this for a long time and never booked it
You went to counselling before and left feeling worse than when you went in
The closeness went quiet, and neither of you knows when
You're the one looking — and you're not sure your partner is ready yet
If you've tried therapy before

"All we did was relive the problems — and left feeling worse."

If that's how couples counselling went last time — an hour spent dragging up every old fight, walking out more raw than when you came in, maybe feeling like the therapist quietly took his side — you didn't imagine it, and you're not the reason it failed.

That wasn't therapy failing you. It was the format. An hour a week sitting in the wreckage, re-litigating the same argument, then sent home to sit with it — of course you left worse. That's reopening the wound, not repairing it.

Tara's first session is built the opposite way. You'll name the problems — you just won't spend the hour drowning in them. That's the whole difference, and it's the reason people who'd given up on counselling come here.

Why it hasn't shifted yet

Most advice treats the argument. This gets underneath it.

Trying to talk it out at homeSame conversation, same corners, same ending. Without a structure you just re-run it.
×
Counselling that opens with everything that's wrongIf session one is reliving your worst fight, you leave more distressed than you arrived. That's why people quit.
×
Waiting for it to settle on its ownDrifting apart isn't an argument you can win. Left alone, the distance just starts to feel normal.
A first session built on your strengthsTara maps your relationship's timeline and looks for what's still working before touching what isn't. You find out what's worth the work — before you do the work.
What working together looks like

A clear path, from the first call.

1

The free discovery call

A short, no-pressure conversation. You describe what's going on in your own words — no intake grilling, no labels. By the end you'll both know whether this is a fit.

2

Session one: your timeline

Together you walk through the relationship — the good parts as well as the hard ones. Tara looks for the strengths first, then sends you home with a couple of exercises to rebuild friendship and practise listening.

3

From there: the patterns

Where your ways of communicating came from, and which new ones are worth learning. Less about relitigating what went wrong, more about remembering who your partner actually is.

Tara Davidson is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in North County San Diego. She works mostly with couples — and often with one partner on their own, because the other isn't ready yet. She's Gottman-trained, and most people who reach out have been thinking about it for a long time before they finally pick up the phone.

A lot of the people she works with are used to being good at hard things — the demanding job, the household, the life they built on purpose. This is often the one problem that hasn't responded to effort, and that can be the most disorienting part. There's nothing wrong with you for not being able to think your way out of it alone.

Her first session is deliberately built the other way round from what most people expect. Rather than opening with everything that's gone wrong, she walks couples through a timeline of their relationship and looks for its strengths. The problems get named — they just aren't the focus on day one. The reasoning is simple: this work isn't always easy, and it helps to know what you're working for before you start.

Questions people usually ask

Do you take insurance?

No — and for couples work that's usually a good thing. Billing insurance means one partner gets a mental-health diagnosis written into their permanent record, and it puts a stranger in charge of how many sessions you're “allowed.” Tara is private-pay, so your work stays fully confidential and entirely between you. She'll walk you through the exact cost on your free call — and there's a fixed-price option if an open-ended commitment isn't for you.

When can we actually meet? We both work.

Evenings, up to 9pm — which is the whole point. Most therapists stop at 4, so someone always has to leave work or burn a lunch. Tara sees couples in the evening, in person or by video, so it fits around two real schedules instead of the other way around.

In person or online — and where?

Either, and you can mix them. In person she's in North County San Diego (easy from Encinitas, Carlsbad, Solana Beach and Del Mar), and by secure video for everyone else or when travel and schedules get in the way.

Is this private? I'd rather people didn't know.

Completely. Because there's no insurance claim, there's no diagnosis on file and no paper trail — a lot of Tara's clients specifically want that discretion. What happens in the room stays in the room.

Is the discovery call really free?

Yes. It's about fifteen to twenty minutes by phone or video, there's no charge, and there's no obligation to book anything afterwards. It's simply how you find out whether Tara's the right person for you.

What if we've tried therapy before and it made things worse?

That's one of the most common reasons people come to Tara. Couples often say the last time all they did was relive the same problems, or that the therapist seemed to take a side. Session one here is built the other way round — starting with what's still working between you. It isn't a promise about the outcome, but it is a different starting point.

My partner isn't sure about coming. Can I start on my own?

Yes. Tara works with individuals on their relationship, and she'll be honest that it isn't quite the same as having you both in the room. Plenty of couples begin exactly this way.

You've been thinking about this for a long time.

One conversation, no pressure — and you'll know whether this is the right next step.
